From Forest Mischief to Pop Culture Icon — The Labubu Craze You Didn’t See Coming

Lifestyle

Hey you!
Yes, you scrolling through reels at 2 AM — did a mischievous little creature with messy fur, cheeky eyes, and a "don’t care" attitude just pop up on your feed again?

Congratulations. You’ve officially entered the Labubu-verse. And no, you’re not alone, globally, celebrities & influencers are in on it too.

Wait...What IS Labubu?

If you're hearing "Labubu" and thinking it’s a pet food brand or some viral sushi roll- take a seat, because we’re diving in.

Labubu is a character & this little gremlin-looking creature has:

Sharp little teeth (but in an adorable way?). Wild, uncombed fur. An expression like it’s silently judging everyone. And loads of chaotic charm. In short, imagine if a forest spirit, a mischievous goblin, and a hyper-stylised manga character had a baby — that’s Labubu.

But Why Is It Trending NOW?

Good question. The Labubu fever isn’t new-new — Labubu is the brainchild of Kasing Lung, a visionary Belgian-Chinese artist known for his storytelling through character design. Originally a children’s book illustrator, Kasing brought Labubu to life around 2012, inspired by his fantasy-style art and love for misunderstood creatures.

Labubu first appeared in his illustrated book, The Monsters, and stood out instantly — not for being cute in a traditional way, but for being weirdly lovable. With sharp teeth, wild hair, and chaotic energy, Labubu felt more like a wild forest sprite than a plushy friend. It debuted as a designer toy in collaboration with How2work — a Hong Kong-based art toy production company in 2015. But suddenly now, Gen Z has adopted it like a spiritual mascot.

Here’s what pushed Labubu to TikTok / Instagram fame:

Aesthetic overload – Labubu fits perfectly with weirdcore, goblincore, cottagecore, and chaotic cute. Pick your vibe.

Limited editions & blind boxes – Everyone loves a mystery. The thrill of opening a box and not knowing which Labubu you’re getting? Pure serotonin.

Retail therapy with no guilt – It’s tiny, it’s adorable, it’s under ₹1500 (if you’re lucky) — perfect for that “I deserve this” satisfaction. Moreover, with the tired but fabulous & done with people, but also wants hugs kind of vibe, Labubu isn’t just a designer toy culture — it’s a personality archetype.
